the thing about an eBay store is so many interesting pieces pass through my hands, i often look back and think wow! what amazing vintage that was- and it came and went like a lightning storm!

so this year i'll be revisiting some of my fave looks. here's one from around a month ago.
when i get dressed- i never spend more than a couple of minutes of putting things together. just feel the mood i want and go with it. thats my way of insuring i keep it rock and roll!

everything here is vintage- the long black jacket is an 80s piece with exaggerated shoulders, underneath is a vintage sheer black lace top and high waisted 80s leather shorts. a;; the accessories are vintage too.

August marks my 2 year anniversary for SHE TIGER VINTAGE! It has been so fun and I have really learned so much! Like how to shake off Paypal hackers, snag good vintage before that hipster lurking nearby does, plead with eBay about technical errors, get the best rates on postage, and photograph myself wearing 70 outfits in two days. Surreal sometimes, yes, but utterly fulfilling and never boring! Plus, I'm using my art/photography degree which quite pleases my parents.

Some highlights of the two years have to be my first $300 dress sale, winning Modepass's Most Stylish Closet award, landing in a French magazine, being interviewed by eBay as an exemplary seller, being considered to speak to Congress on behalf of internet sellers, and... selling vintage to some, er, well pretty darn impressive clients, whose names and businesses I will keep to myself for their privacy! And just receiving all that 100% positive feedback makes me feel soooo happy! Seriously, knowing there are all these magnificent, interesting, stylish girls all around the world and I'm feeding their need for distinctive, one-of-a-kind fashion. What better feeling?!? Plus I love little notes from customers in my inbox- hearing from my individual customers is so great! I'm a nerd!

Here's a flashback to August of 2008, one of my favorite pieces ever- and that was a gorgeous, sheer 1940's dress. This lovely vintage find found its home in Glasgow Scotland, if I remember correctly. In this photo I was also wearing a borrowed set of vintage chains, along with a 1960's mood necklace, and my brown oxfords by Crown Vintage. Also my favorite shade of MAC lipstick that no longer exists : Deceptive. Ah, the past...

so i'm just returning from an extended stay in new york. i was lucky to have a little apartment in the heart of williamsburg and no plans except fun ones like: meet up with friends, get to the beach as much as possible, see things i haven't seen before... it was so wonderful and don't envy me- i haven't had a break in a looooong time! i was accompanied by my little girl and my mother which made for a giggly, girly and super-memorable two weeks.

the apartment belonged to a friend of a friend, and my late nights were spent reading his fine collection of art and music history books, soaking up everything from complete collective works of lewis carroll or touluse-lautrec, to exploring the final days of kurt and courtney in "Loser: The Real Seattle Music Story". Days were spent soaking in beaches and tourist attractions. Nights checking out local eats and bars! Too many to mention, but check out Miller's Tavern on Roebling and Hope for a yummy gourmet burger!

check out this 1980's fuschia ribbed leotard and my new 80s shades with side lenses. i assume they're designed to protect you from your peripheral thoughts.

i keep wanting to cut my hair because it has the tendency to be humongous. but then again there's something to be said for some late 80s retarded volume. i just can't make myself do it. the perfect iconic hairdo will come to me in a dream, i just know it.

tonight i'll be out and about in nashville to celebrate with jami! i'm trying to decide what to wear... hmmm all this great vintage i'm working on for next thursday's auctions overfloweth in my workspace... they're all so darn fab... what a wonderful dilemna!

Last weekend was a big annual charity event here in Nashville with music, art, film and fashion called Fusion. They had a designer's competition and I got to represent and wear the cutest little gingham dresses from a cool label called Paper Dolls, NYC! These were designed by Lukas Longoria in NY, who graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and kickstarted his career working for Betsey Johnson! Lukas was in Brooklyn, and so his sweet brother Josh, who is partners with him in the label was there to represent! We had a funny day of running all over Nashville together looking for the right shoes and some cutie-lacey socks to go with the yellow dress. And it really sucks that you can't see the shoes in either photo! Bleh. There's a really funny story of how we finally found the socks but I'm sworn to secrecy!

Anyway, we took third place- but in my opinion these outrageous dolly dresses from Paper Dolls are number one!

i've really been enjoying playing my taped up electric guitar lately with lots of distortion, and then lots of echo on the voice and singing about the farthest away thoughts i can think of... i can see the words in my mind and they are like a book thats just far enough away you can't make out the words- so you just have to try to imagine what you think it says... knowing outside there are beautiful owls flying about, deer curled up in the leaves... closing my eyes and seeing brooklyn streets on a hot summer night... the hudson river glistening in the sun... these nights are spent sorting through poems in my head and dreams in my heart...

the blues contest

Yesterday, I decided to gussy up and do some photos for the H&M Blues contest on lookbook.nu. Being a cool and gray morning out here on the farm, I decided to take the theme of doing a load of blue laundry. In the contest you're supposed to wear at least one H&M item and have at least two blue items on. I pulled out of my closet the only H&M blue thing I own, a cute little mod-ish dress, a big cool oversized denim shirt, accidentally left here by my father-in-law (he won't mind), and a hoard of blue things like linens, aprons, flowy denim jeans etc.

Then, I asked my seven year old to take the photos. You can tell they are all taken from an angle below... her height! She was such a pro and managed to hold the SLR like an expert, one hip cocked to the side, one smirk of haute couture-perfect blasé on her precious little face. I am pretty certain this little girl will end up way cooler than I've ever been. All in all we spent maybe 4 minutes or so outside- then I brought them in and edited them in Photoshop.

The Ballad of Sushi Complex

This is a series I shot on film with an old Russian twin-lens camera. It was shot on a balcony in downtown Memphis one hot and muggy evening. These are photos of me and my friend Mike who not only is one of the most prolific musicians I know, but also gave me my first punk rock nickname Sushi Complex. The name came about because no matter how broke I was during art school, I only wanted to eat fresh sushi. I wasn' t sure if that meant I was being snobby or just patient and true to my taste. So Mike began addressing me as Sushi Complex. He even wrote a song about it during this time, here's the chorus:

She is the rising sun,
She is an angry one,
full of complexities...
and then Sushi smiled,
and then she looked away,
just like yesterday...
How could she know?

Someday, I swear I will release this song on vinyl because it was so awesome! And these photos will be the artwork. Golly gee, I need some money. Somebody back me!

yes! the weather today was so beautiful- we were able to shoot outside today and not shiver even once! the farm is so pretty in the spring. while we were shooting there was a baby woodpecker learning how to find food! so cool. anyway, to welcome the season, i have a lot of spring time vintage beauties to offer in the store tonight, check them out! prim + proper, lazy daisy and lots more.

So, the great thing about selling vintage from the area where you grew up is that you know every nook and cranny to find it, and everybody and their grandmother knows you do it. Hence I needn't explain how the 500+ pounds of vintage ended up in my driveway this week. I immediately put on my flowery granny gloves and began an exhausting sorting operation, where I set about creating piles of yeeeesh, gross!, sorry- not today, i sort-of-love this, this-may-be-cool-if-you're-really-really-pushing-the-boundaries-of-fashion, and finally, oh my vintage bliss. I even snagged some things for myself like antique sewing notions, a bunch of vintage fabric, mod 1960's throw pillows, and more cute 1940's and 50's embroidered aprons and kitchen linens than any pie-making, winking, domestic powerhouse would ever need.

After a couple of days of work, I ended up with 15-20 bags to donate to charity, which feels nice, and a load of super-cool vintage that will be entering the store this season! Some pieces will even be in this Thursday! And this is some really old vintage. Lots of the pieces are 50's and 60's.

Now girls, let me confess, sorting a motherload of vintage clothes is only fun for about fifteen to twenty minutes, so I definitely did the hard part for you! Enjoy!

you can do this look: make-up lesson from my bad-A bud

one of my best, best buddies in this universe just happens to be a tremendously talented make-up artist. miss jami harris and i first met way-back-when in memphis where we were both studying in art school. we literally ran into each other on the street! it was a cosmic collision that would last a lifetime! anyway, she's the best at make-up- combining her eye for classic fashion and background in fine-art painting, jami can do just about anything when it comes to make-up. so i picked a particularly amazing photo and asked her to walk us through re-creating it! this photo features myf sheperd, i can't find who the make-up artist was, but it appeared not long ago in the magazine Numero, photographed by Matthias Vriens-McGrath and styled by Samuel François.

so in order to do this look, you will need these products from MAC:
velvetone brow pencil
carbon eyeshadow
smolder eye kohl
black cream color base (you don't want too much sheen).
nylon eyeshadow (for the inner)
black zoomlash mascara
midnight media lipstick
night moth lip liner
nylon eyeshadow
omega (a brown-gray eyeshadow from MAC)
lash curler
wipes (because you want to do the eyes first and then wipe away excess)
BRUSHES: #252, 266, 219, 224, 252, 168

1.T he face needs to be matte
Jami recommends oil control lotion from MAC
along with studio fix foundation
Also skin needs to be flawless, so cover any blemishes or flaws with studio finish concealer.
You can use finger or the 252 brush for the concealer, and a buffer brush from MAC #182
LIPS:
Use a black lipstick called midnight media from MAC
It is a great near-black color that packs a little color in for wearability.
And we'll go with nightmoth lipliner.
Fill in most of the lip with nightmoth lipliner and then apply midnight media in the center.
This will give a more deep-red, vampy look.

EYES:
Apply cream color base with #252 all over the lid and brow and inner crease of the eye.
Gradually fade the cream color base out past the brow in the shape of a triangle.
Follow the contour of the nose on the inner part of the eye and extend the cream color base leaving the very inner part of the eye naked (without color).
This part of the eye will have the lighter shimmer.
Apply smolder generously all around the top and bottom lash line.
Smudge into cream color base with the #252 brush.
Then, take the #252 brush and pack on carbon eyeshadow covering the whole lid all the way up to the brow.
Use the #218 brush and smudge smolder under the eye into a triangle towards the ear.
Blend carbon under the eye to create a more blended effect that extends to the point of the triangle.
Use the 218 brush again, this time on the inner part of the eye ans use carbon to define that black area.
Use the 226 brush to blend carbon down the nose and contour.
To finish off... use the 226 brush to blend any areas that need a softer look and add more smolder on the top, bottom and inner rim of the eye.
Remember, the bottom needs to be really rounded out... and then angled.
Use nylon on the inner corners of eyes to open the eyes up. This is that shimmer area we talked about.
Apply 3 coats of zoom black mascara
BROWS:
Use velvetone brow pencil for an extreme look
Use little hair-like strokes to mimic real hair.
Comb through with a brow brush and then apply carbon eyeshadow with the 266 brush for a soft feathery effect!

CLEANING UP THE LOOK:
Wipe up any excess eyeshadow.
Use studio finish concealer if needed with 252 brush.
Then buff studio fix powder with buffing brush..
You want a flawless look... so apply these for a medium to full coverage.

FINAL STEP, CONTOURING:

Use omega, a grayish MAC color to contour cheeks...
You can mix in a little carbon eyeshadow on a 168 brush.
If you prefer more color... try harmony blush from MAC.
Apply the color by the top of the ear and angle down.
Be careful not to go down too far.. this gives the look of frowning.

AND! Voila! Now, that wasn't exactly easy... right? But of course not! Remember, mastering the art of make-up takes time and practice and creativity. Use these guidelines as a start and find techniques that work for you! If you don't have every product and brush we mentioned, get creative. Think of products you have or can afford that can mimick the look of these. But most of all, have fun!

Jami and I are so connected on aesthetics that we can pretty much read each others minds. I can say things like "flat, grit, pearl, mud" and she will nod decidedly in absolute agreeance.

While recently chatting with a friend of a friend at a party in Nashville, I heard the cleverest expression. The girl I was talking with was trying her best to go A.D.A.T... that's All Dresses, All the Time.

Ah! This idea (and terminology) was so scrumdiddly-umtious that I've decided to take a second and pick some affordable dresses for lots of um, real-life scenarios!

We modern girls have the freedom to wear what we want which is awesome- but it's kind of fun to think about life up til the 1960's when women pretty much lived in dresses. And with so many things to do in today's world- let's just envision a life in dresses...

This is my 2010 interpretation of going ADAT!

This past week I decided to harken back to my first months of shooting for the store (2008) and opt for my blue background again! I always like the pop art feel it gives to my SHE TIGER lookbook. These days, I love the winter light pouring in on the deep, strange blue color- a classic RALPH LAUREN shade that falls somewhere in between Napoleonesque Paintings and Gaugin's Tahiti. Yeah. Perfect.

So, tonight i'm excited to post this interview with one of my loveliest and most talented friends Amanda Michael Harris- an artist better known online as rainbow wrangler. she makes brilliant paintings and ink drawings. you'll often find this book-making, sewing, doe-eyed beauty obsessing over vintage fabrics from dresses, textiles and remnants- a main source of inspiration of her work.

YOU, YOUR ART AND YOUR PROCESS

Who are You?: Amanda Michael Harris, live in Albany, NY…from Memphis, TN. I am currently a painter but bookbinding, drawing and sewing lil things also consumes my life.

Can you talk a little about the type of art you are making lately? I am currently enrolled in the Master’s of Science in Art Education program at The College of St. Rose; we are required to take studio classes to further our own skills while focusing on learning how to teach. This program has pushed my thinking, painting and drawings skills more towards the level of artist that I have always wanted to be. With that said, the paintings that I have been doing deal with the idea of interpersonal relationships through the use of pattern and composition. I paint in oil on canvas and acrylic on paper; I find that these two mediums, although both paint, give off different energies and each have a very distinct atmosphere. I enjoy the play between the textures and colors. I have been thinking of how to cross these over into sculpture and haven’t quite figured it out yet.

How long have you been making art? I have been interested in art since I was a wee tot, but I wasn’t serious until high school. So, let’s see…16 years. Whoa, geez.

What is inspiring you right now as an artist? All of the vintage fabric I have been collecting over the past 10 years has been my number one inspiration for the past year or so. It’s hard to find great fabric up here in Albany, Memphis has a much better selection and better thrift stores.

What about your handmades? Is there a connection between them and your art? If so, how do they inform each other? Bookbinding and sewing have led me to the subject matter in my current paintings. If it weren’t for those two skills, I don’t think I would be doing what I am doing. The journals and wallets I make are all vintage covers or made with vintage fabrics that I collect. My handmades and paintings/drawings inform each other because they stem from each other. One does not live without the other.

How have you grown as an artist ? I have learned so much about myself as an artist since I have entered graduate school. I am grateful for the opportunity to go back to school. I let myself get stuck in a stagnant place with my art for so long, I was scared to do anything else. I was also a little embarrassed about my previous work. I didn’t feel it was at the fine art level that it could have been. But now, I kinda feel empowered, like I am a completely capable artist. I like it.

What has been the toughest thing about being an artist? Having the courage to show myself and my work and of course, making money.

I will always love paint pens and my rapidiograph pen is my best friend.

FASHION FRIVOLITY/ YOUR SENSE OF STYLE

How do you think art translates to fashion or clothing?
I believe that fashion is a visual art, there isn’t a translation between the two; they exist side by side and within each other.

How would we find you dressed in the studio? I am a very, very messy painter. I wear latex gloves and often use my hand as a palette, so dressing nice is not an option. I wear my blue jeans, which were nice until I forgot and wore them to the studio and a comfy t-shirt. I made a smock out of an old 80’s bed sheet that I usually wear over my clothes. It gets hot as hell in the studio at school, if it were up to me I’d paint in the nude but I can’t.

And going out? Going out? I live in Albany, NY. The music scene and the art scene up here is not to my taste and well, we don’t really go anywhere unless a great band rides through our town or a neighboring one. But if we do happen to get a wild hair up our behinds, I love wearing dresses! I would wear dresses everyday if I could. I am a big fan of boots and stockings too. I was aghast when Doc Marten’s came back into vogue, but am now secretly admiring them, but I did giggle with my sweetheart when we saw some faux docs at Walmart the other day. I certainly try to look my best everyday, I may be a slob when it comes to painting and living but I like to look neat and nice. My boyfriend thinks I dress like a hobo though. Whatever.

You have loads of pretty + unique tattoos. Tell me about them! You wanna see my tat? Well, everybody has seen Hokusai’s The Great Wave, right? It’s on my shoulder. A friend of mine from art school did it for me, he is amazing and translated it perfectly but, now that I think of it, I guess I never got it finished... it’s very subtle and washy, no color except for blue. I love Japanese printmaking, I haven’t done it myself though. It’s so delicate and clean. I also have a mandrake couple that’s from the Ortus Sanitatis, it’s on my upper, inner arm. I get a lot of funny giggles from children when they see that one. I might have to get a leaf tattooed over the man’s nether regions, since I am going to be a teacher. Another one I love is on my forearm, it’s of some cute lil robin redbreasts on a wire. The image is from a vintage tea-set I found at Bojo’s in Memphis. The one on my upper shin is supposedly angelic script. It says Michael, after the arc angel. I am not religious but that one is an homage to my deceased uncle whom I am named after. The great story behind that one is that when my big sister moved back home from San Diego, we surprisingly found out that we had both gotten that tattoo, albeit in different places. My most recent one, done in 2006, reads, ‘The secrets within me can be seen through love.’ It is handwritten in Italian on my foot. It’s kinda cheesy but at the time, my life was in major transition and I needed it. I have a couple more but they are from when I was younger and if I could laser them off I would. The next one I get will be of Tennessee because I miss it so!!!

I am not the type of girl who cares or even really knows about brand names for fashion (talk with me about paint and I can tell you the best), so I can’t really give you an exact lustful shoe…let’s see, let me look up some bookmarks and find a good pair…I’ll be right back. Earlier this year I had the opportunity to meet one of my customers! The lovely France de Griessen of Paris, FR and I met up for coffee in downtown Nashville one summery morning. She has a great style, with an affinity for these sweet, romantic, feminine pieces- which totally compliment her all-out rock and roll stage presence and beautiful tattos! She is a gorgeous, sweet and striking girl with awesome style.

from time to time, i surprise myself with full-fledged grown-up-ness (that term not being an example). today i put together a cream ensemble for this week's auctions. i like mixing new + vintage pieces. i wanted a sophisticated winter look using creams/whites. in this outfit the jacket is late 80's /90's vintage from French label Louis Féraud, the top (from small french label) and pants (Express) are new, the hat is 1940's silk, and the boots are creamy gray knee boots from the 60's. the belt is 80's Anne Klein. i think it's sometimes a challenge to mix era's... so, how did I do?

every once in a while... when the mood strikes me, or more honestly... when i run out of plain boxes and envelopes to ship out vintage in... i get downright ridiculous making one-of-a-kind parcels for my customers! It can't be guaranteed everytime you order- but you never know if you might be the next to receive a truly one-off collaged box- a product of not only neccessity but art school that trained me to cut, paste, doodle and draw like a kindergartner at craft time.

Here's one I made today... decorated with images by Jeurgen Teller and bound for an anonymous fashionista in Israel.

whats in my mind this fall? ooh, for me fall is about turning inward a little. piling on layers, coldness sets in... my skin gets paler and paler... you know... everything just gets a little more gothy and romanticized in my world. forget spring renewal or exuding summery heat- fall is for brooding. Dark purple rouge, almost black nails and deep crimson lips suddenly become the norm. the approach of halloween means reading creepy vampire tales and watching tim burton's 1999 film sleepy hollow.

I have been interested in vintage since I was just a girl. I remember well my first vintage purchase... a black 1960's Jackie O looking coat in mint condition (of course I still have it). My mother and I cooed momentarily over the fine tailoring, the sheer elegance of the piece. The luxurious, shiny black liner. How beautiful, I thought. Next came old levi's, shredded jeans jackets, and a killer turquoise faux fur that looks straight from the cover of Janis Joplin's Pearl. I was about 12 when it started. It also coincided with my first fashion mag subscriptions: Harper's Bazaar and W. I remember too, some kids snickering at my second-hand fashions. How sad for them, I thought to myself, that they are so totally boring and lame ;) .

"I never thought you'd do like this... " For some reason, I just can't get enough Zeigeist this summer.

So what's on the SHE TIGER playlist this summer? I always get a lot of messages wanting to know what songs are on the playlist. So let's talk about it! I love picking songs to play at SHE TIGER because it might be a little different than what I normally listen to. In my personal world, you might find me brooding in all black in the corner listening to an early bauhaus recording, or better yet their side project tones on tail. Or I might be spinning around the room to some dirty 1960's psychedelic feeling garage rock like The Groupies or Love. But alas, SHE TIGER VINTAGE is a place where music is light as air. it's really sad about michael jackson. as a little girl i used to watch "the making of thriller" over and over! i was mesmerized! michael jackson was a really amazing musician and did so much that no one had ever done before in pop music.

i'm wishing now that i still had my "thriller" jacket, that sold last year to a lucky girl in france...

As you know I have been working on a very nice and hefty dose of bada** vintage for the store for the past couple of weeks. At the same time I've been doing a lot with my band, we had a great show the other night in Nashville and we are returning to NYC this weekend to finish our debut album with super producer Commissioner Gordon (Amy Winehouse, Santana, Damian Marley + more!). We can't wait, and to herald the occassion, I'm gonna have a HUGE collection of vintage available in the store while I'm there recording! Yeah sure, partly I need some money to support my art-rock lifestyle and partly because it's been a long time coming!!! I'm super excited, and I think you will be too.

Well up tonight are 12 awesome new vintage auctions. I stayed up late last night watching "Slumdog Millionaire". I am a huge fan of Danny Boyle, and have to say this is his best! And all the M.I.A. mixed in the background, the beautiful super-saturated imagery of India, the ethnic beats, chants, sadness, love, happiness... it's just perfect. The dichotomy of harshness and cruelty v. love, pop, truth, tv... these are my inspirations today in life, in fashion, in music, in photography.

Friday Night Electric Boogaloo + Other Vintage Inspiration

Well, so, Friday night I stayed up really late watching Youtubes with Brennan of eighties rap, poppin, breakin, dancing and other inspiring vintage video diddlies. Somehow the journey ended ended up laughing hysterically at Tracy Morgan "drunk" videos, but I digress. Back to the early dance moves of all these talented people like Electric Boogaloo- and fast-forwarding to the late 80s with Salt n Pepa, aggressively gyrating and singing with delay on their voices, flourescent flat boots on their feetz and spandex leotards on their booties.

Awesome! The haute heavens shined down on me earlier this month. Just a few weeks ago I moved into a new space to pilot the lear jet that is SHE TIGER. The space being a friend's father's old office, meaning there were neato vintage desks and ashtrays all over the place- left in my hands to donate to charity. Sooo after setting aside a few vintage staplers, paper clips, and tape dispensers for my operation, I had to clean out the desks and get them ready and LOW and BEHOLD!! A swanky pair of vintage Oscar De La Renta frames inside one drawer! Now I'm sporting them in all the pics until I can't stand the chic-ness any longer. They are so amazing, probably from the late 70s or early 80s. Check em.

In Store JANUARY 22nd:

Hey peeps-

I'm excited. It's a new year- and my goal is to make SHE TIGER better and better! I did my first shoot at my new place. I'm really happy with the lighting - and my new set-up. Of course I'm the queen of anti-complacency, so soon enough I'm sure I'll have to find a bright pink or blue or green wall, or a field back at the farm to shoot in front of!!!

Alot of fun things this week in the store! I can't stop looking for victorian vibe stuff- steeped in romantic overtones- then of course the basic FRESH 80s. Lovin Topshop's Sport Nouveau, which I have been wearing for like mmm 6 years or more? Ah well that's okay- I don't get bored with that look, and I like the subtle changes it's taking on. I've got to get a pair of their harem pants, I think.

So here's to 2009- our new awesome president- and looking fabulous everyday in killer vintage!
